How to Safely Remove and Reinstall an Original Arcade PCB
Learn how to safely disconnect, remove, handle, inspect, and reinstall an original arcade PCB without damaging connectors, wiring, components, sockets, or vintage cabinet hardware.
Original arcade game boards are durable, but decades-old connectors, wiring, sockets, mounting hardware, and previous repairs can be damaged by rushed removal or incorrect reconnection. Careful documentation and handling are essential.
This guide explains a practical process for removing and reinstalling a PCB while preserving the original board, cabinet wiring, and connector orientation.

Why Careful PCB Removal Matters
Original arcade PCBs may be more than forty years old. Their edge connectors, sockets, solder joints, ribbon cables, wire harnesses, mounting rails, and plastic connector housings can become brittle or worn over time.
Most removal damage is avoidable. Problems usually occur when a connector is pulled by its wires, a board is allowed to flex, a plug is reinstalled backward, a grounding wire is forgotten, or power is applied before every connection is verified.
A slow, documented process protects both the PCB and the cabinet and makes reinstallation much easier.
Prepare the Work Area
Clear enough space to place the PCB flat without stacking it on tools, hardware, metal parts, or other boards. Use a clean, dry, nonconductive surface with good lighting.
Gather labels, masking tape, a marker, small containers for screws and spacers, and the correct hand tools for the cabinet hardware. A phone or camera is essential for recording connector locations and orientation.
Keep mounting screws, washers, spacers, clips, and brackets grouped together so they can be returned to their original locations.
Disconnect Cabinet Power Completely
Turn the cabinet off and unplug it from the wall before opening the cabinet or touching any internal wiring.
Never remove, install, or reconnect an arcade PCB while the cabinet is powered. Applying or removing connectors under power can damage the PCB, power supply, wiring, or connected accessories.
This guide concerns the game PCB and its low-voltage wiring. Do not work on the monitor, power-supply internals, or other high-voltage areas unless you are properly trained.
Photograph and Label Every Connection
Before disconnecting anything, take wide photos showing the entire PCB and surrounding wiring. Then take close-ups of every edge connector, plug, ribbon cable, grounding wire, adapter, daughterboard, and cable route.
Label each connector and its matching board location. When several plugs look similar, use matching labels such as A-to-A, B-to-B, or numbered pairs.
Record connector orientation before removal. Photograph the side facing Pin 1, the keyed edge, the wire colors, and any markings that show which direction the connector belongs.
Do not assume a connector is protected against reverse installation. Many original arcade connectors are not keyed.
Disconnect Edge Connectors, Plugs, and Ribbon Cables
Grip connectors by their plastic housings. Never pull on the wires. Pull evenly and gently, working the connector loose a little at a time if it is tight.
Remove edge connectors straight off the board edge. Avoid twisting or levering them against the PCB because this can damage the connector fingers or flex the board.
Small plugs may have retaining tabs. Release the tab before pulling. Ribbon-cable connectors should be removed by the connector body rather than by the ribbon itself.
If a connector will not move with reasonable pressure, stop and inspect it for clips, screws, locking tabs, corrosion, or previous modifications.
Remove Grounding Wires and Mounting Hardware
Photograph and label any grounding wire before removal. Grounding points may use ring terminals, spade connectors, screws, or mounting hardware.
Identify how the PCB is mounted. Common systems include plastic standoffs, metal rails, wood-mounted brackets, card cages, sliding trays, clips, and screw-mounted spacers.
Support the PCB with one hand while removing the final screw, clip, or bracket. Do not allow the board to drop, twist, or hang from a remaining connector.
Store all mounting hardware together and note where each spacer, washer, bracket, and screw was installed.
Handle and Store the PCB Safely
Handle the PCB by its edges whenever possible. Avoid touching connector fingers, chip pins, solder joints, component leads, and socket contacts.
Keep the board level and support large or multi-board assemblies with both hands. Do not carry a board by a daughterboard, heat sink, ribbon cable, socketed chip, or attached wiring.
Place the board on a clean, dry, nonconductive surface. Keep loose screws, metal tools, drinks, and other conductive objects away from the PCB.
Do not stack PCBs directly on top of one another. Components and solder joints can scratch or damage the board below.
Inspect the PCB Before Reinstallation
Check the board for loose or bent components, damaged sockets, bent chip pins, corrosion, burned areas, cracked connectors, broken wire terminals, missing hardware, and loose daughterboards.
Inspect the edge connector for contamination, heavy wear, lifted pads, or burned contacts. Check the wiring harness for loose terminals or wires that are beginning to pull out of the connector housing.
Look for previous repairs, jumper wires, adapters, stacked sockets, replacement components, cut traces, and other modifications. Compare them with the reference photos taken before removal.
Do not remove the CPU, ROMs, or other chips unnecessarily. Removing components can bend pins, damage sockets, or create orientation mistakes.
Reinstall the PCB
Return the PCB to the same position and orientation shown in the original reference photos. Support the board while reinstalling rails, clips, standoffs, spacers, brackets, and screws.
Do not overtighten mounting screws. The board should be secure without bending, twisting, or crushing plastic standoffs.
Reconnect grounding wires to their original locations before restoring power.
Reconnect plugs, ribbon cables, adapters, and edge connectors using the labels and photos. Match connector orientation, Pin 1, wire colors, keyed edges, and board markings.
Press connectors into place evenly. Never force a connector that does not align naturally. Stop and recheck its location and orientation.
Final Connection Check Before Power
- The PCB is mounted securely and is not flexing.
- Every screw, spacer, clip, and bracket is installed correctly.
- All grounding wires are reconnected.
- Every plug matches its label and original location.
- Edge connectors are fully seated and correctly oriented.
- Ribbon cables are straight and correctly aligned.
- No wires are pinched beneath the PCB or mounting hardware.
- No tools, screws, or loose metal parts remain inside the cabinet.
- The installation matches the reference photos taken before removal.
First Power-Up After Reinstallation
After completing the final connection check, close or secure any cabinet access area that must not remain open during normal operation.
Restore power and observe the cabinet during startup. Confirm that the game boots normally, the display is correct, controls respond, sound is present, and no unusual smell, smoke, sparking, or abnormal sound occurs.
If anything appears abnormal, turn the cabinet off and unplug it immediately. Do not continue cycling power without finding the cause.
If the Game Does Not Start Correctly
Turn the cabinet off and unplug it before checking connections. Compare every connector with the original photos and labels.
Check for a partially seated edge connector, reversed plug, shifted ribbon cable, forgotten grounding wire, loose adapter, bent pin, or wire terminal that backed out of its housing.
Do not keep applying power when connector orientation is uncertain or when there are signs of overheating, burning, smoke, sparking, or an unusual electrical smell.
Take clear photos and a short video of the problem before changing multiple things. Good documentation makes technical support much more effective.
Removal and Reinstallation Checklist
