Why Does a Classic Arcade Game Have a Black Screen or No Video?

The phrase black screen, however, can describe several very different conditions. One cabinet may have a powered monitor displaying a black raster while the game PCB is not running correctly. Another may have a working game PCB but no usable video signal reaching the monitor. A third may have a monitor that is not operating at all.
Correctly identifying which condition exists can prevent unnecessary parts replacement and help narrow the troubleshooting process.
Is the Monitor Completely Off or Is the Picture Simply Black?
The first distinction is whether the monitor appears to be operating.
Depending on the monitor and cabinet, a completely inactive display may look different from a powered display receiving no visible game image.
Useful observations include:
- Does the cabinet power on normally?
- Does the monitor appear to have power?
- Can any raster, glow, retrace, or changing brightness be observed?
- Can game sounds be heard?
- Does inserting a coin produce a credit sound?
- Does the game appear to respond to controls?
- Does the monitor briefly change when the cabinet is powered on or off?
These observations do not identify the failed component by themselves, but they help distinguish a video-path problem from a PCB that may not be executing the game program at all.
A Black Screen Does Not Automatically Mean the Monitor Is Bad
An arcade monitor can only display the video information it receives.
If the PCB is not generating correct red, green, blue, and synchronization signals, a working monitor may still show no useful picture.
Likewise, damaged wiring, an incorrectly connected adapter, a dirty edge connector, or a missing video ground can interrupt the signal between the PCB and the monitor.

Is the Arcade PCB Actually Running?
A board that has stopped executing its program may produce no normal video even when the monitor itself is functional.
Possible causes include:
- Incorrect or missing PCB power
- CPU not operating
- Missing or unstable clock signal
- ROM problems
- RAM faults
- Reset circuitry holding the CPU in reset
- Address, data, or control-bus faults
- Socket or connector problems
- Incorrectly installed upgrade hardware

Check PCB Power Before Assuming a Video Failure
Classic arcade logic depends on correct DC voltage reaching the PCB.
A power supply can appear to be operating while voltage loss occurs through cabinet wiring, connectors, fuse holders, edge connectors, or damaged contacts.
Low or unstable PCB voltage can prevent the CPU, memory, or video circuitry from operating correctly.

Edge Connectors and Cabinet Wiring Can Cause No Video
The video generated by the PCB must travel through physical connections before it reaches the monitor.
Depending on the cabinet, that path may involve:
- PCB edge fingers
- Cabinet edge connector
- Dedicated wiring harness
- JAMMA harness
- JAMMA adapter
- Intermediate connectors
- Monitor input connector
Dirty contacts, damaged edge fingers, loose connectors, incorrect orientation, broken wires, or adapter problems can interrupt one or more video signals.

Why the CPU and Clock Circuit Matter
A classic arcade PCB normally requires a functioning CPU and valid timing signals before normal game operation can occur.
If the CPU is not executing instructions, the rest of the system may never initialize properly.

ROM and RAM Problems Can Also Affect the Picture
Program ROM contains instructions the processor needs to run the game, while RAM provides working storage during operation.
A serious ROM or RAM problem can prevent normal startup, cause a blank display, produce corrupted operation, or trigger diagnostic errors.
A black screen alone does not prove that either type of memory is defective. The surrounding system must be considered.
Black Screen Is Different From Garbled Graphics
A game producing recognizable but incorrect graphics is generally a different troubleshooting situation from a board producing no visible image at all.
Missing sprites, incorrect colors, repeated patterns, blocks, scrambled characters, or corrupted backgrounds indicate that at least part of the video system is operating.

What If the Game Has Sound but No Picture?
If the game accepts credits, responds to controls, and produces normal game sounds, that is useful evidence that at least part of the CPU and game logic is operating.
In that situation, attention can shift more heavily toward the video-generation circuitry, sync generation, RGB output, wiring, connectors, and monitor input.
It is still important not to assume that every other PCB circuit is perfect. Some arcade systems use separate video processors, RAM, ROMs, clocks, or support logic that can fail while the main game program continues to run.
Can Test Mode Help?
If the board is running well enough to enter a built-in diagnostic mode, test mode can sometimes provide useful information about RAM, ROM, controls, sound, or other hardware.

What If the Black Screen Started After Installing an Upgrade Kit?
If the cabinet worked immediately before an upgrade installation, begin by checking the items that changed.
Verify:
- The correct kit and PCB compatibility
- CPU and daughterboard Pin 1 orientation
- CPU seating
- Daughterboard seating
- CPU socket condition
- Bent or missed pins
- Required game-specific connections
- Any ROM changes specified by the installation guide
- Cabinet connectors that were removed and reinstalled
Avoid changing several unrelated components at once. Returning the PCB to its documented original configuration can also be a useful diagnostic step when appropriate.
Use Caution Around Arcade Monitors
Arcade monitors can contain hazardous voltages even when the cabinet is unplugged.
Basic observations and low-voltage PCB checks can often be performed without servicing the monitor itself. Internal monitor diagnosis, high-voltage measurement, or CRT servicing should only be performed by someone familiar with the safety requirements of that equipment.
Diagnose the System Before Replacing Parts
A black screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
Determine whether the monitor is powered, whether the PCB is receiving proper voltage, whether the game appears to be running, and whether valid video is reaching the monitor before deciding which component is responsible.
That controlled approach is more useful than immediately replacing the monitor, CPU, ROMs, RAM, or other parts based solely on the appearance of a black screen.
