Why Bootleg PCBs Can Be Different
Bootleg arcade boards were produced without following one universal hardware standard. Some copy an original design closely, while others rearrange circuitry, substitute components, alter ROM layouts, or combine functions differently.
Two bootleg boards for the same game can even differ from each other. A CPU in the expected package does not prove that the electrical connections around it match the original PCB.
Because the daughterboard interacts with specific signals at the CPU or adapter connection, apparently small hardware differences can matter.
What a Conversion PCB Means
A conversion uses an existing arcade board or cabinet as the basis for another game. Conversions can range from official manufacturer kits to later field modifications.
The PCB may contain changed program ROMs, added daughterboards, jumpers, adapters, different processors, modified address decoding, or other hardware not present on the original configuration.

Why Reproduction Boards Need Their Own Compatibility Check
A reproduction PCB can look very similar to an original board and may use the same game ROMs, but reproduction designers sometimes substitute components or alter the board layout.
Different socket types, logic substitutions, modern programmable devices, changed trace routing, or revised power circuitry can affect whether an original-hardware daughterboard operates correctly.
Compatibility with one reproduction does not establish compatibility with every reproduction of the same title.
Repairs and Modifications on an Original PCB
Even a genuine original PCB may have decades of repairs. Replacement sockets, stacked sockets, jumper wires, daughterboards, trace repairs, memory substitutions, and modified ROM sets can affect installation.
A repaired original board is not automatically incompatible. The important question is whether the area used by the upgrade still matches the supported configuration and is electrically reliable.

Before concluding that an unusual PCB version is incompatible, inspect the socket and the solder side beneath it.
Conversely, a perfect socket does not make an unsupported bootleg or reproduction electrically compatible.

Good photos usually answer compatibility questions much faster than a description such as “it looks original” or “it plays the correct game.”
Do Not Use Power as a Compatibility Test
Installing a kit into uncertain hardware and applying power is not a safe way to find out whether the board is compatible.
A reversed, misaligned, or electrically different connection can damage the CPU, daughterboard, socket, or original PCB.
When the board does not match the documentation, stop and verify it first.
