Socketed CPUs are designed to be removable, but the processor pins, socket contacts, and decades-old arcade PCB can still be damaged by uneven lifting, excessive force, incorrect tools, or poor alignment.

Why CPU Removal Requires Care
Arcade CPUs often use dual in-line packages with two rows of thin metal pins. These pins can bend, fold underneath the processor, or break when the CPU is lifted unevenly or pulled at an angle.
The original socket can also be damaged. Excessive prying may crack the socket, spread its contacts, lift solder pads, damage nearby traces, or stress the arcade PCB.
The safest method is slow, even removal with the correct tool and continuous attention to the CPU, socket, and surrounding components.
Disconnect Cabinet Power
Turn the cabinet off and unplug it from the wall before touching the PCB, CPU, daughterboard, connectors, or wiring.
Never remove or install a CPU while the cabinet is powered. A partially removed or incorrectly seated processor can place electrical signals on the wrong pins and damage the CPU or PCB.
Remove the PCB from the cabinet and place it on a clean, dry, nonconductive surface before beginning.
Confirm That the CPU Is Socketed
A socketed CPU sits in a separate plastic socket mounted between the processor and PCB. The CPU body is visibly raised above the board, and the plastic socket can usually be seen beneath it.
A soldered CPU sits directly against the PCB with its pins soldered on the opposite side. Do not attempt to pry up a soldered CPU.
When the CPU mounting method is unclear, stop and inspect the board from the side and solder side before attempting removal.
Photograph the CPU and Pin 1 Orientation
Before removing the CPU, take a clear photograph showing the processor, socket, surrounding PCB markings, component location, and Pin 1 end.

Use the Correct Chip-Removal Tool
A proper integrated-circuit puller or suitable chip-removal tool provides more even control than pulling with fingers or prying with a large screwdriver.
The tool should engage the short ends of the CPU or fit carefully beneath the chip without crushing nearby components or contacting traces.
Avoid tools that are too thick, sharp, or large for the available space. Do not pry against capacitors, resistors, sockets, traces, or other chips.
Lift Both Ends Gradually and Evenly
Raise one end only a small amount, then move to the opposite end and lift it by a similar amount. Continue alternating until the CPU is free from the socket.
Keeping the processor level reduces sideways pressure on the pins and prevents one row from leaving the socket while the opposite row remains deeply seated.
Support the PCB near the socket so it does not flex while removal pressure is applied.
Do not twist the CPU, rock it aggressively from side to side, or pull one end completely free before the other.
Place the Removed CPU Safely
Hold the removed CPU by its ends or plastic body rather than by the pins. Avoid touching the pins more than necessary.
Place it on a clean, protected, nonconductive surface where the pins cannot be struck, crushed, or dragged across the work area.
Keep the CPU separated from loose screws, tools, metal parts, and other chips so it cannot be confused or damaged.
Inspect Every CPU Pin
View both rows of pins from the side and from each end. All pins should be parallel, evenly spaced, and aligned at the same angle.
Look for pins that are bent inward, bent outward, folded beneath the body, twisted, cracked, corroded, or shorter than the others.
Slightly misaligned pins may sometimes be corrected carefully with controlled pressure, but repeated bending can weaken the metal and cause a pin to break.
Stop when a pin is badly bent, cracked, loose, or partially broken. Do not attempt installation until the problem has been evaluated.
Inspect the CPU Socket
Check the original socket for cracked plastic, corrosion, missing contacts, spread contacts, contamination, loose solder joints, previous repairs, or damage caused during removal.
A damaged socket can create intermittent operation even when the CPU or daughterboard appears fully seated.
Repair or replace an unreliable socket before reinstalling the CPU or installing a daughterboard.
Align and Reinstall the CPU
Verify Pin 1 using the CPU notch or dot, socket marking, PCB silkscreen, original photograph, and game-specific installation guide.
Hold the CPU directly above the socket and align both rows at the same time. Use strong lighting and inspect both long sides and both ends.
Confirm that every pin is directly over a socket hole. Make sure the CPU is centered and not shifted by one position or resting outside one row of socket contacts.
Apply gentle, even pressure across the CPU body. Seat both ends gradually rather than pressing one end fully into place first.
Stop when resistance feels abnormal. Remove the CPU, inspect every pin and socket hole, and begin again. Never force the processor into the socket.

During most HighScoreSaves installations, the original CPU is removed from the arcade PCB and installed in the socket on the daughterboard. The daughterboard then installs in the original CPU socket.
Verify Pin 1 separately for the CPU and daughterboard. The CPU must match the daughterboard socket orientation, and the daughterboard must match the original PCB socket orientation.
Inspect the CPU pins before seating the processor on the daughterboard. Then inspect the daughterboard pins before installing the complete assembly on the original PCB.

When the CPU Will Not Remove or Seat Normally
If the CPU will not lift with reasonable, even pressure, stop and inspect for corrosion, a stacked socket, an unusual retaining method, adhesive, previous repair work, or a mistaken assumption that the CPU is socketed.
If the CPU will not seat, check for bent pins, incorrect row spacing, a shifted position, damaged socket contacts, debris, or incorrect orientation.
Do not use excessive force and do not apply power to test an uncertain installation.
